Tradition is those elements of values of heritage that are valued
as useful in shaping the present and the future.

International contest

The objective of the New Traditional Jewellery (NTJ) contest is to promote the knowledge and appreciation of jewellery art in the business world, among private individuals and civil authorities. NTJ enables jewellery artists to present themselves to a wide public in a way in which both designer and viewer stand to gain.

The biennial international design contest for jewellery artists builds bridges between artists and buyers, between tradition and today’s world. For each edition of NTJ a theme is chosen based on historical and gradually disappearing jewellery traditions. Participants are challenged to create new, contemporary forms for old symbol bearers.

A professional jury selects some fifty designs which are displayed in an exhibition at the international SIERAAD Art Fair, where the winner of the contest is officially announced. Subsequently, NTJ is shown at home and abroad in a travelling exhibition. Jewellery artists from all over the world, using new techniques and materials, look with contemporary eyes at old crafts, methods, materials and sometimes already forgotten symbols. The NTJ exhibition not only shows the entries of the designers, but also their source of inspiration and motivation. This unique approach tells much about the artists, the original piece of jewellery, its history and current significance.

In this way NTJ joins the past to the present.
